  • April/98: Natalie Merchant Shows Support For Hometown Youth Programs (MTV Headlines): "Merchant did not specify the dollar amount of her financial donation, which will help fund programs for pregnant teens at the Boys and Girls Club, as well as the city's YMCA and YWCA. Merchant says she was spurred to pitch in after hearing about how more than a dozen teens from Jamestown were exposed to the AIDS virus by a single person."

  • Natalie appeared on Tibet House Benefit Concert (9 March, NY).
      Reviews:
From allstarmag news (cortesy of J. Tuason):
" Later, [Sheryl Crow] dueted with Natalie Merchant on an old American folk song (Merchant's choice) called "When They Ring the Golden Bells," on which Crow got to show off her accordion- playing skills (and they weren't half bad, despite the fact that at the end of the evening she was having so much fun that all her notes were off).
Merchant, meanwhile, was typically restrained during her allotted time, performing a dark new ballad on piano. (The format moved things along briskly, with artists segueing into and out of their own sets by collaborating with others.)"

From New York Times (cortesy of " tmt "):
" American singers turned to gospel, as Sheryl Crow and Natalie Merchant sang a glowing duet on "When They Ring the Golden Bells." Ms. Merchant's solo song, "Thick as Thieves," pondered biblical imagery and "the chaos of millennium "."
