119 Review
Motherland, the new long-awaited Natalie Merchant's fourth album, produced by T Bone Burnett (Wallflowers, Gilliam Welch, Eels, Counting Crows), features 12 tracks, a mixture of the soul of Ophelia and the heart of her previous Folk Tour. The title track, Motherland, a beautiful folk song, gives the spirit of this album.
Three years since the last studio release - Ophelia (98) - this waiting certainly won't dissapoint fans. And Motherland Tour seems to be quite promising.
From the catchy Just Can't Last to the touching Tell Yourself, Motherland is less darker than previous album (i.e. more accessible). Surprisingly, it features different Natalie's vocal tones at Golden Boy and The Ballad of Henry Darger, a medieval-like tune, bringing even more emotion to the album.
Hightlights: Just Can't Last, Tell Yourself, Golden Boy, Not in this Life
