Freedom usually puts a spring into one's step, but Natalie Merchant's
1993 liberation from longtime folk-rock act 10,000 Maniacs seems to have
left the vocalist as somber as an Amish gravedigger. Her 1995 solo
debut, "Tiger Lily," was rife with ruminations on loneliness, jealousy
and death. "Ophelia" continues the sorrowful slide, beginning with the
title track, which posits Hamlet's doomed love as Everywoman. On the
plus side, Merchant's newly concise, relaxed singing style (gone are the
Maniacs' knotty word marathons) makes the melancholy go down smooth.
